Surpise proposal and engagement locations in new york city
Are you planning to propose to your partner? Would you like to do it in New York City?
I work as a wedding and engagement photographer so I’m used to capturing beautiful surprise proposals in different areas around NYC.
This city is the perfect place to do a magical and dreamy proposal. It will be a special and unique moment in your lifes , so I would love to help you during the process and photograph the moment without your partner knowing anything.
Also, hiring a proposal photographer will allow you to capture and relive that moment again and again.
If you are interested in organizing a marriage proposal in New York and you want me to be the photographer of such a beautiful moment, let’s talk!
On this post, I want to help you to discover my favorite places to do a surprise proposal in New York. Obviously all the photos below are taken and edited by me. Let’s take a look!
Dumbo Park
This park is a 10-minute walk from the Brooklyn Bridge and Manhattan Bridge. It has beautiful views of Manhattan, especially at sunset. There are many specific locations to propose and it’s usually a quiet place, without traffic, with grass areas and the famous Jane’s Carousel.
Brooklyn Bridge
The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the most iconic places in the world to propose! I recommend you avoid December and January, they are usually very cold and windy months. In addition, it’s important to plan the proposal at a time with few people. At dawn it’s usually quite empty, especially on the weekends. There’s also a beautiful light at sunset. The weekday afternoons are usually less crowded than on the weekends.
I also suggest doing the proposal near the arch on the Brooklyn side to have the Manhattan skyline in the background.
Bethesda Terrace and Fountain
It’s located around the 72nd St in Central Park, 5-min walk from The Bow Bridge, The Mall, The Lake and the Sheep Meadow! There are usually many musicians playing romantic songs. My favorite seasons to propose there are fall and spring.
Bow Bridge
The Lake
The Mall
Gapstow Bridge
It’s located in the southern part of Central Park, in front of the Pond and a 5-minute walk from the famous Wollman Rink (ice skating), the Cop Top and the Umpire Rock.
The Pond Area
Umpire Rock
Umpire Rock is a great spot to do a marriage proposal in Central Park. You can see many iconic skyscrapers in the background and it’s located just a 5-10 minute walk from the Gapstow Bridge, the Pond area and Columbus Circle.
Cop Cot
It’s a small wooden shed very close to the Gapstow Bridge. It’s a cozy place to propose, although very dark. I recommend you place some lights, candles and petals. It will be an intimate and very romantic spot for you both.
Conservatory Garden
It’s located in the north of Central Park. They are beautiful gardens perfect to do a marriage proposal. There is a quiet environment, few people and a lot of vegetation. The gardens close around sunset time.
The Edge
It’s a new rooftop in Manhattan that opened in March 2020. Edge is the highest sky deck in the Western Hemisphere located at 30 Hudson Yards (next to the Vessel) , with a one-of-a-kind design, it’s suspended in mid-air, giving you the feeling of floating in the sky. The ticket costs around 40 USD. It has beautiful views of Manhattan, especially with the light of sunrise and sunset! You can see perfectly the Empire State, Times Sq and Midtown and NJ.
Times Square
The most famous place in the world… it’s not a location for everyone, but if you want your proposal to be epic, you can do it in the middle of Times Sq in the morning or in the afternoon (I honestly suggest the light after sunset). Be careful with people!! It’s very crowded especially in summer and Christimas days.
Top of the Rock
I fell in love the first time I visited The Top of the Rock. The observation deck has 3 different levels open to public (the highest one without glass). It’s my favorite spot in NYC because you can enjoy the amazing views of the whole city (Empire State and Central Park side) . The tickets cost around 40 USD and the busiest time is at sunset. So the best time to do a surprise proposal is around 8-9 am, when the building opens.
I love when people ask me to photograph their proposal on the Top of the Rock. We get magical photos with the amazing views of Manhattan and lovely engagement images between the different levels after the proposal moment!
Battery Park
The High Line
The Oculus
Brooklyn Botanic Garden
The Vessel
West Village Famous
Gardens at Columbia University area
They are a small gardens located in front of The Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine. It’s a romantic, calm and intimate spot to propose to your partner in Manhattan!
